6 Addictions That Internet Marketers Should Get Rid Off

posted in Practical Tips, Blogging, Using Law of Attraction In Blogging, Successful Mindset |

Hey Folks,

This post was inspired by a post I read at positiveblog.com about “7 habits of highly ineffective people” and since I just met up with more then 700 hundred internet markets last month. I thought what I am going to be sharing here would help online entrepreneurs hugely.

Addicted To Traffic Statistic
Tracking your traffic is important to any internet marketer. It tells you what works and what don’t. It also tells you what is your traffic, sales and opt-in’s are from. But you just need to check it once a day, maybe twice. If you find yourself checking your statistics every 30 minutes. You are addicted!

Tell you something, it doesn’t matter if you check it 50 times a day or 1 time a day, it won’t increase your sales. Once a day is enough to see a short term trend or if your newly implemented tactic is working. Once a week is good enough to check if your strategy is working well enough for you and which source provides good traffic. Got it?

Addicted To Instant Messaging
I seldom use IM but I know a couple of fellow bloggers who are IM fanatics who cannot get off IM. True, it’s a good way to build relationship online and provide support for friends but there are times where IM is a pain. If you don’t know how to control your IM, it will interrupt your schedules at the most inconvenient time.

The result? At best, you take a longer time to complete your task. At worst, whatever you wanted to do never gets done. You might want to consider setting up a time where you will switch on your IM. Let your online friends and buddies know about the timing and you get to network with them during that window. This way, you get the best of both worlds :)

Addicted To Email
I guess in some ways, anyone with an email account are in some ways addicted to email. Similar to traffic statistic, we tend to check this all too often. Sometime people get so carried away, they just stare at the screen willing another email to pop in. It is as if you are some kind of pest control guys wanting to get rid of every pest and the emails are the rodents.

Let’s face it, unless you are working as a online tech support, you don’t need to check your email that often. The emails won’t run away and it won’t self destruct. So, just like our solution for traffic statistics, check your email once or twice a day is sufficient. I check mine once in the morning and once at night.

Addicted To Web 2.0 Site
Now the new fave of the internet are Web 2.0 sites or what is commonly known as social networking sites. It’s fun with loads of information, people to meet and interesting stuffs to do. It is actually a marketing haven for Internet Marketers to socialize and get to show off their wares. All Internet Marketers should get involved in Social Networking Sites if they are serious about their online business.

What’s wrong here is that some marketers get too addicted to a particular site and that’s all they do - Stick to one site. Now, it’s good to be focus but you need to move on after you have build up the rapport and credibility to “explore new land”. Sticking to just One or Two sites just don’t cut it. Think about it.

Addicted To Finding The Next New Thing
I know everyone is looking for the latest and greatest in Free Traffic Strategies, Viral Marketing Tool, etc. How I know? I am one of them too. :)

But what’s important here is when you find one, stick to it, put some time and effort in getting it to work. Once you get it to generate a decent, if not outrageous, kind of traffic then you move on. What many marketers do is to sign up and leave it on it’s own and start looking for the next big thing again.

Do you really think it’s gonna work that way? I don’t.

Addicted To Surfing
Now don’t get me wrong. As part of an internet marketers daily routine, you will have to surf the internet and surf a lot at that. The problem is after sometime, some marketers get addicted to surfing and surf for the sake of surfing! What do I mean by that?

Look, an internet marketer surfs for publicity, knowledge and relationship building. Even if you are not a internet marketer, this applies to you if you wish to promote your charity site, online dairy or share your secret. Wherever you go, leave a trace and by that I mean a comment, a remark on visitors log, a reply on a forum, a note to the author, etc.

You have already hit the site and read the post why not leave a trace? Think about it.

Are they Bad?
The 6 things above are important tools or habits for any internet marketers if used in the right dosage. Going overboard and getting addicted will be counter productive and side track you from your real goal. So take some time to think over and I invite you to share your experience and thoughts about them.

Cheers
James

I have successfully eliminated all those addiction except checking email.

I have my Outlook turn on all the time. So, I will get notified then emails come in.

Whenever I see emails come in, I’ll go to check it immediately. Sometimes, I just click on my outlook while waiting for a page to download.

Thanks to Stephen Pierce’s time management lesson. I can control myself now. :)

Very good article…I used to be online everyday when I was back in uni, both at uni computers and at my home computers and I chat everyday with my friends. However, then work full time, have family life after uni finished, so I never chat again, still online everyday at work, seldom open the computer at home till I get into this weblog thing…and now I realise I get my self addicted to checking emails and web stats…it really is a distraction…I am now starting implementing a policy to check emails only twice a day. I just started today…so let’s see how my experiment go…:)

Very good points and agreed. All too often those break into my routine, but when done right they can bring some great results. The IM and Email are probably the worst of the offenders..

    Hey Raymond,

Great to hear that! I have not totally gotten rid of all of them. But I have minimized their impact by having a schedule. If I don’t reply promptly, that’s because I have not reach my scheduled time for checking email or replying comments :P

    Hey WTJ,

You are right! It does not just impact internet marketers. Everyone who use computers and the internet extensively will get addicted to some of these at one point or another. Most likely email and Instant Message. :)

    Hey Mr Law of Attraction,

All these are important tools for Internet Marketers. We can’t be FREE of it! :P

We just want to be conscious of it and use it as it was intended to and not be addicted to it. :)

I totally agree with you, computer is really addicting device. But you should control it by yourself. That’s what I called “discipline”. You should only use it for a reason. But people has so many reasons to use. Well, we can’t take it off anyway. Just put some limits!

    Hey car,

You said it! Use it for a reason. Depending on which reason is stronger, you will end up doing that stuff. So if you have to find a reason so strong that none of the distractions will pull you away from what you need to do. :)

    Cheers

So true. Surfing and traffic stats ring true for me. Email is always open and checking automatically every 15 minutes so I don’t need to obsess with that though I’m sure I would given the opportunity.

Yap! I was addicted to Stats and Surfing when I started online. Boy, was it tough to get over it! I am glad I could get over it and now it occupied a small fraction of my time, when necessary. :)

Yes I agree fully with you james
I personally find that e-mail and im are two of the biggest distractors in achiveing a productive day.

Sometime we have a goal to accomplish as internet maketers when we log on to the internet but more often than not these sinfull and seamingly deceptive and destructive habits really pull us of track.

I guess the solution is to cultivate decipline and to allocate a time frame to do these things and then NOT indulge in them after the aloted time.

And I guess it all boils down to proper time management..don’t you agree james ?

P.S got my blog up and running (thanks for the inspiration james)

    Hey Raj,

Glad to hear that you got your blog up and going! Congratulations!

I agree that proper time management does help you overcome some of these distraction but you will need to cultivate a habit of not exceeding your alloted time for each activities (this part needs some practice).

    Cheers

Well I have to aggree with mr law of attraction. By constantly using your energy to check the incidentals in the business you arent as effective as following a definate process that you can count on for results. Ex- you need 1000 contextual links to be #1 in your search engine keyword ,are you more effective reading emails and other incidentals or are you more effective focusing your priorities throughout the day on actions that yield results. Letting it all go is simply not being so emotionally attached to a particular process that you begin to become disfunctional . It really is good time management not to be majoring in the minors of your business.
