Can Dreams Be A Good Goal?

posted in Self Improvement, Self Motivation, Goal Setting, Manifestation, Dream, Belief, Motivation, Take Massive Action |

Hey Folks,

In our last post, “What Are Goals and Goal Setting?“, I invited you to share with me your opinions and I am very happy that I got a warm response offering different opinions. I love every single one of those comment and I thank you for sharing with me. Keep them coming.

Goals Need to Be Real?
One of the comments in the last post was this:

I disagree with Napoleon Hill’s definition.
Goals are too reality-based to be dreams.

It is a perfectly normal perspective and I was, for the better part of my adult life, thinking the same way. In my ex-profession as an engineer, I had to have goals that stick to reality. No doubt that whatever I plan for was “on solid ground” but the goals always lacks inspiration and excitement. Hence, I never really found anything worth pursuing on a long term basis.

Can Dreams Be A Goal?
Since I embraced the idea that I should set goals that I can dream about, I have found excitement in setting goals again. The excitement drives me forward, drives me to take action and I have found myself in place and situations that I would never otherwise have thought possible. Such as being a full time blogger, such as being able to share my experience and share positive thoughts reaching out to hundreds and thousands of people.

Would all this be possible if I had a reality-based dream? I think not.

Are Dreamy Goals Natural?
In fact, it is my belief that it is a natural thing for us to dream and dream big. Children’s dream a lot. They never really understood the difficulties of achieving what they want but it doesn’t stop them from dreaming. Here are some examples:

- They dream about being famous actors or actresses when they can’t even read a script
- They dream about being doctors even when they are scared stiff at the sight of a nurse with a syringe.
- They dream about being teachers but hate the spelling test they are getting from them

They are not afraid to dream and some of them do become what they dream they would be one day.

So What’s Missing

“If you have built castles in the air,
your work need not be lost;
that is where they should be.
Now put the foundations under them.”
- Henry David Thoreau

So, can dreams become good goals? Absolutely, as dreams are typically inspirational and motivating by nature. You just need to have a direction and a plan to achieve it (that’s the foundation). Does that make sense to you? Now is your turn to talk.

Cheers
James

    Hi James,

What a nice phrase, “build the foundation under the castle”

How very true. I love that.

I absolutely believe now that dream can be a reality as long as we believe in it and take consistent and actions upon it. I wrote about this in my blog a few days ago using the example from the movie Ratatouille. The story line from the movie portrayed this in a very effective way, in fact many people give up their dreams because of their limiting beliefs. When you dream, you envision it, when you plan it, it is more a reality, when you act upon it, then it is real. What would happen if Colonel Sanders (KFC) gave up too soon? Probably there will be no famous yummi KFC today…ha…ha…ha…:D

    Hey Marta,

I cannot live without KFC! But back to the topic, dreams can be realized if a person puts his heart and soul into it. :)

Dreams are what we start with and if we add motivation, determination, action and celebration/reward we can have what ever we want in the world. It’s our own cycle of life that we each have to put in place for it to work. A plants cycle of life starts with a seed(dream), then soil(determination, growth(action)and fruit(celebration/reward).

The thing is though that often, people lack the inspiration to think of foundations to build under their castle. They wouldn’t even know where to start. Or they are lacking the will to make it happen. For example the kid in your post that wants to be a doctor, what if he doesn’t want to put himself through years and years of medical school? He can dream of being a doctor as much as he wants, but there is no wish to build the foundation so it will never be.

As for myself, by this time next year I will be driving around in my brand new Toyota Landcruiser Luxury. What needs to happen until then? My income needs to grow (substantially) and become more stable.

    Dear Mike,

“What needs to happen until then?”

You just need to act toward it! Just Dream about it won’t materialize without action. There is always an element of ACTION whether you like it or not.

    Hey Michal,

A dream that does not motivate you is called a day dream. The dreams I was referring too are those that the moment you think about it, you get excited, restless, motivated, that type of feeling. Have you ever had those type of dream? There must have been one and when you get it, I doubt very much that you will not take any action. :D

    Hey SK,

    Well said :)

Yap, any dream coupled with action stands a good chance to come true. With Massive action, it will stand a better than good chance to come true. With Planning and follow-through, it will come true.

    Hey Bryan,

I know you have a big dream :)

Fact is, many people don’t allow themselves to dream. They just day dream, which is why the goals they set are mundane stuffs that can’t even excite themselves, much less motivate them. I hope to inspire them otherwise.
