Annoucements: We Are D-List Compliant

posted in Announcement |

Hey Guys,

Today is maintenance day. It’s a day I reflect on our blog, what we have done/posted, what have gone right/wrong and more importantly what we can do better! I have also taken in suggestions on how we can improve our site, improve our readability, our delivery of content and create more values for our readers. Actually, the reflecting has been going on for a while, but today is the day I take action after some serious consideration!

I have made the some changes to our site for the following reasons:

1) To encourage and reward participation using comments

- We are now D-list Complaint. Meaning that any comment that has a website url listed in the URL box gets a link back to their site. Goodbye to “nofollow”. But please follow this guidelines
- Comment constructively. Avoid 2 word comments like “Nice post”. If you have to, at least tell me why it’s a nice post so I know what I have done right :) A constructive comment will entice readers to take a look at your site.
- Don’t spam your link, use the URL box for your website url. 1 link is enough to link back, 2 is spam.

2) To reduce spam

- Due to removing of “nofollow”, I have enhanced my spam filtering with 2 other plugin’s mainly to remove robot spams. You can see one of them when you try to comment.

3) Improve readability

- I have reduced the front page to 5 post for faster loading and shrank all my images.
- The –more– tag has been removed so RSS feeds will not be cut off midway.

I personally love the changes, especially the D-list part. It allows me to build links back from sites with good relevant content while I comment constructively at those blogs. I also get to reward my readers in the same way. This is, in my opinion, a better way to get technorati rating then viral link exchanges. It creates real value to readers at each D-list sites.

Last but not least I would like to thank Court over at http://courtneytuttle.com. It is there that I got a lot more in depth understanding about D-list, technorati and many useful plug-ins for wordpress.

Now is the time for your feedback :)

Love,
James

I think this is a good idea, I need to look into the coding end of it a little more and do this with my personal blog.

Thanks for the heads up about this!

    Nice post :)

Only joking…I would never leave a 2 word comment on such a comprehensive article! Excellent information and you’ve put mine to shame.

I hope I didn’t miss it on your blog, but there’s a great range of badges on Randa Clay’s great web site that let’s everyone know “U Follow”!

    http://randaclay.com/blog/i-follow/

I chose the CSS option: http://randaclay.com/ifollow.html

    Good luck with it!

I went do-follow last night. I think it’s a great improvement for blogs who do this. Saw your post at blogcatalog.com so I came over to give you a comment. I can see you’re also someone who works hard on their blog to make it a great experience for everyone. Thanks!

I fixed up my nofollow to do-follow about a month after I got settled into blogging. It is a great way of encouraging interaction on your site and also helps in the ’stickiness’ of the site :)

Wordpress plugins makes blogging so simple.

I disabled rel=”nofollow” too. I got a complaint from one visitor though. He/She said that McAfee Site Advisor (part of the McAfee Security Suite) considered my Web site as “illegitimate”, meaning my blog could be a spammer or something that steals information.

I had another encounter when I tried to follow the URL of one of my commenters. Her Web host somehow posted a warning that the referrer site (which is mine) could be a spammer. There was also a mention of the rel=”nofollow” attribute that was disabled.

I do believe in DOFOLLOW movement. You’re right! It’s a way to encourage participation. I’m just wondering why sites with nofollow disabled are being treated as spammers.

    Hi Gab,

So far I have no such complain (fingers crossed). But I guess quite a fair bit of spammers exploited “dofollow” so some Antivirus filters are being conservative. My Norton does not complain about it though.

I still support “You Comment, I Follow” movement :)

    Cheers

Nice work on all the updates. Just noticed one thing about the anti-spam function you have. Looks like Pete’s anti spam plugin? I used it for quite some time but recently, it was getting by-passed with a few persistent spam commenters. I finally had to install Spam Karma 2 + Michael W’s Math Comment Spam Protection. They work together and I hope they can help you fight spam as well.

Although Spam Karma was flagging all these as Spam, Akismet was filling up fast. Instead of risking Akismet blowing up, I find that banning the offending IP address permanently via the server’s firewall works even better!

    Good luck & nice work!

i love your blog james and karen

Your article is timely and quite insightful. I think social media marketing is only going to get bigger and bigger. New resource-sharing websites are appearing almost daily, so smart marketers are going have to be wise in choosing which networks are worth getting involved with, and which ones are going to waste their valuable time.
