9 Secret Steps To Life Transformation: Do You Procrastinate

Hey Folks,

Have you been taking massive actions in moving towards your goal since my last post? If your answer is yes, that’s GREAT! If your answer is no, then you may have met the monster that eats success for supper and it’s name is PROCRASTINATION!

Procrastination

Do you like the cartoon? It depicts a mild form of procrastination but is procrastination nonetheless. In this instance, laziness is the root of procrastination.

So what are the other causes of procrastination? I have personally experience the following at one time or another:-

1) Fear Of Failure - This is very common among, well, everybody. I have never heard of anyone who wished upon themselves to be failures or to fail in everything they do. But being fearful of failing is probably the number one cause that prevents most people from moving forward!

2) Not Painful Enough - This is the most common among employees. Their job pays just well enough but never really enough. The work is just stressful enough but just a hairline below their breakpoint. The system they had to use is just frustrating enough but just barely good enough to still get their job done. Familiar? So why have they not done anything to improve their situation? Well, it was just not painful enough!

3) Striving for Perfection - This is a very common among professionals such as engineers, scientist, etc. Being good enough to meet their goal is never good enough. They need it to be perfect! I call that procrastination as it hinders their progress towards their goal in an efficient manner!

Even today, I have to be mindful that they still exist in my life and I have to stay vigilant against them. I’ll share my secret weapons against my 3 incarnations of procrastination in my next post.

But before I go, I’ll like to ask you:

“Do you procrastinate? If you do, What are the causes of procrastination for you?”

Till the next post on Wednesday (10th July 07), take care and don’t procrastinate!

Love,
James

Yeah, I strongly agree. Laziness is indeed the root cause. Oftentimes, I find reasons to not do a certain thing. Then I expound on it, making it an educated alibi.

Point #1 is a significant hindrance in my life until now. I don’t really know the reasons. Maybe I’m just too sensitive.

    Hey Gabriel,

Thanks for sharing, I had to face down all I have written above. Remember to come back on Wednesday when I share how I overcame them (well, most of the time) :)

oh goodness…i am such a procrastinator…i have been ever since i can remember and, sadly, i passed it on to my girls…

i think fear of failure is what gets me…i’ve always had a belief that i’m not good enough and i think that’s what has driven it…that belief has caused me so much grief and i am working hard to clear it…

i also think that it’s an issue of avoidance for me especially if it includes some kind of confrontation…break ups, dealing with nasty financial situations, talking to my parents about my brother’s drug addiction…anything that involves unpleasantness, i have been known to procrastinate about…

    Hey Lisa,

Thanks for sharing your inner thoughts with us. I know how difficult it is when is involves those situation you mentioned. Here’s something I used in such a situation - I use fear to bury procrastination. Yes, I use fear to bury procrastination. How did I do that?

I simply make myself visualize what there consequences are if I do not do it. Nasty financial situation gets nastier, breaking nasty news being delayed and get accused of hiding the truth, etc.

When I think of how bad the situation will get if I don’t get it done now, I will just do it now. Period. :)

I totally relate to this article. I am also procrastinator and so is my boyfriend.. lol.. things never get done around the house. I try to break free of it by just doing it.. and feel so accomplished when I don’t put things off. I think like Lisa, it’s fear of failure. I am also a perfectionist (great, double whammy) so it goes hand in hand. Great article Karen and James..

    Hey Susie,

Thanks for sharing. Don’t worry about the double whammy, I got 4 of them to deal with :P

When I try to avoid my habit of procrasination, I remember that I NEED to listen to that small still
voice that constantly and gently reminds me to get something done. The trouble is that it is really
easy to ignore the voice. Just like I chose to ignore the voice. I can chose to listen to the voice.

Well said Nadege, it does comes down to that (we can chose what has to be done or what not to be done). It’s our own choice and our own responsibility. :)
